If feeling a bit restless when it is time to sleep:
repeat something to yourself that brings peace to you.
“I AM safe”
“God Loves me”
“I AM love”
“I AM peace”
Today, I catch moments of impatience and turn them into opportunities to quiet my mind and feelings, and fully engage in co-creation with Spirit. I appreciate the power of divine right timing in my life.
(from May’s issue of Science of Mind Magazine)
I have been a fan of Marianne Williamson for many years. Here are a couple of evening prayers for us from her wonderful book, Illuminata A Return To Prayer:
Thank you for this day.
Thank you for my safety and the safety of my loved ones.
As I enter sleep, may these hours give me peace.
May they bring healing to my mind and body.
While I sleep, dear Lord, please bless the world.
Where there is pain, where there are people who
have no place to sleep, who suffer and who
die, may Your angels come unto them and
minister to their lives.
Please let the light stream in.
Please use my hours of sleep,
Please prepare me, during these hours of rest,
for greater service to You.
May the light that surrounds me, tomorrow
shine through me.
Soften my heart.
Thank you, Lord.
I surrender to you the day now over.
May only the love remain.
Take all else into the fire of your transformative
Release me, release others, from any effects of
my wrongmindedness or wrongdoing.
Return me to your light.
As I now give to You who I am, what I did, who
I loved, who I failed to love, please make all
Take all things.
May I continue to grow in Your light and love.
Tomorrow, may I be better.
“Loving God, you guard and protect all of your loving children. Be with me now as I try to sleep. Let me feel safe, secure, and sleepy as I imagine myself resting in your arms. Guide me into rest, that I may begin tomorrow afresh, to the Glory of your name.” Amen.
Repeat “guide me into rest” to promote drowsiness.
During a particularly challenging time in my life about ten years ago, I purchased a beautiful framed copy of the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr. It is a widely known prayer- popular in 12 step programs. I have found it helps me to “let go and let God” when life’s challenges seem too big and overwhelming. This prayer helps to center me and give me peace.
The popular abbreviated version goes like this:
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
The full original copy:
God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that you will make all things right,
If I surrender to your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
